When you apply for a job, your first impression is usually what you’re looking for.
But what you really want to know about your future is the job you actually want to do.
We asked experts to help us pick the right resume.
Key points:Job search experts share the right things to write on resumes and cover letters.
They say you should be more direct and direct with your message.
“A resume is a tool that is used by the employer to present their job and job candidates, it should be the first thing that employers see,” says Job Search Experts (JREF) president Stephen Lutton.
“It is the first piece of work that employers look at in order to decide whether or not to hire a candidate.”
The first thing employers look for when they apply for an employee is their CV, they want to see how that individual has done, their accomplishments, what they can do for the organisation.
“You need to tell them exactly what you’ve done for them, how you want to contribute and what they need to work on.”
When you’re writing a resume, you want it to be a really simple and clear message,” says JREF president Stephen.”
If you don’t tell your story and how you’re doing it, then you’re going to have people thinking, ‘Oh, I can’t get a job’.
“It is important to include a reference to your current position and experience in the body of your resume, so employers know that you’re interested in the position and are looking for a suitable candidate.JREF’s job search experts also recommend that you use the following:• a letter of recommendation, if you are applying for a new job.• a cover letter, if they are looking to hire you for their current position.• cover letters for other positions if you would like to apply for more than one.
The right kind of resume is important.”
I would say that your resume should have some of the skills that you have,” says Jill Pemberton from Pembertons Career Services.”
You don’t want to put too much of your portfolio out there.
“She says the best way to tell what you are good at is by looking at what your previous employer has shown.”
Your portfolio should be very broad, you should know what you do well and you should not put too many things out there,” she says.”
Most importantly, you have to be prepared to write a very good CV that they can read and they can use to evaluate you.
“If you’re applying for another job, JREF says you need to get your CV and cover letter from your current employer.”
Don’t just send them your CV.
Send them a cover sheet,” says Pembertons.”
There is no substitute for your CV, it’s the only way you’re getting the job offer.
