If you’re still looking to make a career change, you may have to ask yourself what’s the best career move to make.
The latest survey from job-hunting website Monster, released on Wednesday, found that job-seekers aged between 25 and 34 were the most likely to be looking for work, with 42 per cent of respondents having made a career decision and the lowest rate in any age group.
Among those who have made a job-change, nearly half (48 per cent) have gone into full-time employment, the highest percentage of any age bracket, according to the study.
A total of 543,000 people were surveyed, and Monster says the survey’s findings are not a representative sample.
For more on the latest jobs news, read this article Respondents also reported that most respondents were interested in a full-year role in the IT, media, publishing or advertising sectors, and in terms of what they were looking for, the most commonly identified roles were sales and administrative roles.
Monster also found that while job-seeking has slowed in recent years, the proportion of people still seeking work has increased significantly over the last three years, with 38 per cent saying they had made a decision.
“As a result of this, the rate of job-changing among people aged 25 to 34 is up, with a slightly higher percentage (40 per cent), compared to the same time period last year,” the survey said.
“The biggest difference between 2016 and 2017 is that in 2016, only 26 per cent said they had decided to change careers.”
The survey also found many people were unsure about what they wanted to do after they had been unemployed for longer than five years, as well as the impact it had on their finances.
While people aged 18 to 24 were the least likely to have decided to leave work, the figure rose to 26 per per cent among people 25 to 29.
“For young people, the best-case scenario is that they will find a job after a period of unemployment.
For older people, however, the worst-case outcome is that the situation they are in may have led to them making a career-change,” the report said.
Monster says the online survey results show that people are not interested in jobs that can be easily outsourced or that require the highest level of knowledge or skills.
“Despite a long period of recession, the vast majority of people are looking for new work opportunities and want a fresh start,” the company said in a statement.
However, many people said they were more likely to look for jobs where the salary is higher than the average for the sector, such as finance, health or hospitality.
The survey found that people who had a good experience in the field of the job they were applying for had higher career aspirations than those who had never had a job.
“Those who are experienced in the profession tend to have a better career track record than those with less experience in a similar job,” the study found.
“Many people have experience in both the finance and HR fields but lack the experience of a full year of experience in those areas.”
Monster also said it was not uncommon for people to have been unemployed longer than they had expected, with just 15 per cent having completed at least 10 years out of a job, compared to 38 per of those who started their career before 2010.
“This has an impact on people’s self-confidence and they may not think they have a good chance of finding a new job.
However, the reality is that many people who have had a long wait to find a suitable job, especially those who are on the job hunt for a new career, may find it easier to change their career route,” the statement said.
